About Don Shane

For nearly 40 years, Don Shane shared a sports passion with his viewers at an exceptional level. After graduating from the University of Maryland and earning his Master’s Degree in Journalism from the University of Colorado Boulder, Shane started his career on the radio in Texas before his first on-air opportunity in Oklahoma. After stints in Indiana and Washington D.C., he had his first gig in Detroit at Channel 4 in the early 1980s. He then hopped to Chicago and Boston before returning to Detroit in 1989 to be the top sports anchor at WXYZ-TV Channel 7. His arrival marked the beginning of an illustrious career that would span over two decades. At Channel 7, Shane quickly established himself as a standout personality. His on-air chemistry with TV legend Bill Bonds and his infectious enthusiasm endeared him to viewers across the ultra-competitive media market. With his exuberant personality and unwavering professionalism, Shane became a star in his own right, capturing the hearts of Detroit sports fans.

From the sports desk to the locker-rooms and the fields, Shane loved what he did and it showed every minute he was on the air. For 23 years, Shane was a familiar face at nearly every major sports event in Michigan. From the NBA Finals to the Stanley Cup Finals, from Rose Bowls to Final Fours, and from the World Series to top boxing attractions, Shane was there to provide unparalleled coverage and insight. His masterful prose told the hidden stories of the athletes and what made watching these games such a magical experience. His presence added depth and excitement to the local sports scene, earning him the respect of colleagues and viewers alike.

Beyond his role as a sports anchor, Shane showcased his versatility with programs like the “Big Ten Ticket,” a college football pregame show co-hosted with former Michigan football coach Bo Schembechler. His ability to connect with audiences and engage with guests made him a beloved and valued member of the broadcasting community.

Shane was also known for his adventurous spirit and willingness to take on challenges. His “Dare Don” segments in the 1990s captured the imagination of viewers, as he fearlessly tackled tasks sent in by fans. Whether it was enduring a hit in full football pads from Chris Spielman (which resulted in 3 ribs being broken), or donning a Bonds-like toupee for a sportscast, Shane’s willingness to go the extra mile entertained and inspired audiences.

He met and interviewed the biggest names in sports but was never above celebrating the local high school teams or taking the time to mentor those interested in broadcasting.

Over the course of his career, Shane won 23 Michigan Emmy Awards, and received multiple honors from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters and the Associated Press. In addition, he won a Sciences Silver Circle Award, National Academy of Television Arts Award, and was inducted into the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 2008. Moreover, Don Shane has been elected into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame, class of 2024.

His impact on the local sports broadcasting landscape and contributions to Detroit sports is undeniable, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of broadcasters. He brought immense joy and excitement to countless viewers and left an indelible mark on the industry he loved. While Shane may no longer grace the airwaves, his spirit lives on in the memories and hearts of those who had the privilege of witnessing his talent and passion firsthand. A life well-lived and a career filled with remarkable achievements.

After his retirement in 2012, Shane moved to Phoenix, Arizona and then Los Angeles, California to spend the last years of his life close to his children, Justin and Lindsay. His family welcomed their first grandchild, Dino, in May 2022.

Shane passed away on February 24, 2023 after a long battle with Parkinson’s and Dementia. He was 70 years old.
